Bette Louise PIERSON Obituary (2024)

Bette Pierson, age 85, passed away on September 3, 2024. She was born in Seattle, WA on February 5, 1939 and was adopted by loving parents, Lila "Margie" (Switzer) Pierson and Glen Pierson of Sunnyside, WA. She excelled at sports in high school and was athletic honoree of the graduating class of 1957. Bette had an early work ethic working at the Sunnyside Canary from high school through college. She was a top fruit and cherry packer each year. She could also pack a suitcase the neatest and still get everything in it for a months vacation. She graduated from Central Washington University majoring in history, economics, and sociology. She was employed as a social worker for DSHS for many years in Yakima and Toppenish offices. Bette was a favorite on the Yakama Indian Reservation with clients and tribal members. She was fair and fought for her clients, especially foster kids at that time (60's and 70's). A natural animal whisperer, she loved all animals. She could never kill even the grossest bug but would trap it and set it free. She was never without a horse, a dog, or cats. Her dad got her first horse, Ginger, from the Humane Society. No matter how many times she got bucked off, she always got back and eventually won. Many times, the neighbor cats, chickens, etc would come over for a visit and usually stayed. Even ducks that had a pond next door would come over and slept among the cats on her driveway. Bette tended to be a private person, but her kindness and generosity extended to many work and personal friends over the years in various ways. She likes to fish, camp and motorhome around the NW areas. She travelled with friends Pat and Lucy to numerous world destinations including cruises and trips to Hawaii. Bette is preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, several favorite aunts and uncles in Canada, her many animals and close work and personal friends. She is survived by a favorite cousin in Winnipeg, Jo (Ted) Wright; an uncle and others in Canada; best lifelong friend, Pat Sahr; a loved horse, Touche; and long family friend Nancy Marrs. Bette bravely endured many years of chemo for a blood disorder. She rarely complained and was grateful to God for the extra years. She was also very grateful to the doctors and nurses at North Star for their help and kindness. Also, thank you to neighbors Carol and Jeff Gross and especially Rick and Tamra Marrs who have been a godsend. Bette fought the good fight and though her passing was somewhat sudden, she leaves those of us who knew her with an emptiness. She was a loyal friend and a peacemaker.
