Dorothy Rosella Dills Obituary (2024)

Dorothy Rosella Dills was born in Freeman, South Dakota, and raised in Kanabec County, Minnesota, to Adolph and Annie Kleinsasser. She was the middle of three children. As a teenager, during WWII, she began working at the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant in Ramsey County, Minnesota, to support the war effort, where she machined artillery shells. She later experienced wanderlust and traveled westward with a friend, eventually landing in Granger, Washington (1946). She was married to Jack Hendrickson in Granger. They had one son, Carl. Dorothy worked as a bank teller at the Old National Bank in Granger, and then eventually managed the Circle Inn Restaurant in Granger for many years, where she enjoyed providing first jobs for many young people in the area. She was active in community groups, the Granger Chamber of Commerce, and served on the Granger Town Council. Dorothy later moved to Yakima to be closer to her son and his family, where she remained until the time of her death. During her time in Yakima, she also worked as a pharmacy assistant. Dorothy was a member of the St. Paul Cathedral of the Yakima Catholic Diocese, and prior to becoming ill spent many hours preparing sandwiches and other outreach for those in need. Dorothy was a very loving and generous grandmother who enjoyed spending time with and spoiling her grandchildren. She also greatly enjoyed cooking, playing cards with friends, and trips to the beach. Dorothy is preceded in death by both parents and sister Evelyn. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law Carl and Patricia Hendrickson, grandchildren Jonas Barnes, Hannah (Adam) Tobia, and Derek (Shiann) Hendrickson. She is also survived by brother Ervin Kleinsasser (Delores), of Minnesota, and numerous nephews and nieces. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the loving care and help from her caregivers at The Terraces at Summitview who cared for Dorothy during the last year.
