Robert Wayne Asbury Obituary (2025)

Robert Wayne "Bob" Asbury passed away peacefully on November 4, 2025, in Yakima, Washington. He was loved and valued for his adventurous spirit and gentle, calm nature. Bob was born with the heart of an explorer and spent a significant portion of his life driving and exploring the beautiful landscapes of Eastern Washington. He had a lifelong fascination with cars and motorcycles, an enthusiasm he proudly shared as a member of the Apple Valley Volkswagen Association. Bob served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea as part of the post-war mission to maintain peace on the Korean peninsula. During this time, he embraced opportunities to explore South Korea and Japan, adding to a lifetime of memorable journeys. A graduate of Whitworth College, Bob dedicated 30 years to public service as a case worker and supervisor with the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services. His commitment to helping others left a lasting impact on the lives of many throughout his career. Music played a special role in his life--he enjoyed playing guitar and banjo and often entertained family with his musical talents. He also was a talented swing dancing partner, often delighting others with his skill on the dance floor. Bob shared his love for the outdoors with his two daughters through countless camping trips and road trip adventures. He also had a special bond with dogs, whose companionship brought him great joy throughout his life. He is survived by his wife, Carole Asbury, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage. He is also survived by two daughters and their spouses: Emily Asbury and Corbin Bergmann, and Andrea (Asbury) Sukanek and her husband, Steve Sukanek. He leaves behind four grandchildren: Callan Sukanek, Layne Sukanek, Daphne Pastard, and Kaz Bergmann. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Asbury and Freda (Cornelius) Asbury. To honor Bob's memory and legacy, take a drive down a blue highway with no particular destination in mind. Stop when something catches your eye. Bring coffee--and maybe a dog. If you're lucky, you might stumble upon an out of the way cafe serving strong coffee and unforgettable huckleberry pie. Bob's memory lives on in the hearts of those who knew him. May his adventurous spirit and gentle presence continue to inspire all who remember him. A celebration of life is being planned for spring or summer of 2026.
