Darryl (NMN) Baker Obituary (2025)

Darryl Baker, 58, of Yakima, Washington, passed away on May 11, 2025, after a long and difficult battle with addiction. His struggle was one that deeply affected him and those who loved him, but it never defined the entirety of who he was. Darryl was a father, a son, a brother, a cousin and a friend with a heart full of love and an unshakable spirit that endured through years of hardship. Born 1967, in Inglewood, California, Darryl was a vibrant and adventurous soul from a young age. He loved nature --snowmobiling, boating, sun basking, and getting wood up in the mountains were amongst some of his favorite outdoor activities. He valued a beautiful day and truly appreciated wildlife. At the age of nine Darryl and his family moved to Yakima, WA. As a teenager, he and his brother Ron discovered a passion for weightlifting, and together they founded the weightlifting club at West Valley High School, a reflection of their shared drive and dedication to the sport. Darryl worked alongside his father and brother to help build the family business, Baker's Carpet, where he spent his twenties as a floor covering installer. His proudest role in life was being a father. His children, Grayson Baker, and Lauren Baker were the light of his life. No matter the difficulties he faced, his love for them remained steadfast. He made many cherished memories with them camping, boating, and traveling, moments that will live on in their hearts. Addiction was a part of Darryl's story, and he fought it with courage. He had periods of hope and healing, and through it all, he remained deeply loved. His struggle was a painful reminder of how relentless addiction can be, and how desperately those who face it need understanding, support, and compassion. His family stood by him with unwavering love, and empathy throughout his journey. Darryl is survived by his loving mother, Joan Baker of Yakima; his children Dylan Lee, Grayson Baker, and Lauren Baker all of Yakima; brother, Ron Baker and his nephew Spencer Baker also of Yakima. Darryl is also remembered by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins in California and Idaho. He was preceded in death by his fathers, George Baker and Ronald Fleener, as well as his aunt Maureen Danchuk. Darryl had a gift for connecting with people. He made friends easily and carried a deep love for animals. His tender demeanor and kind heart was felt by all. Despite the weight of his struggles, Darryl never lost his warmth or his capacity to love. As we honor his memory, we also carry forward a message of hope for those fighting addiction, for those who love them, and for those who've lost someone too soon.
