Dorothy Day Riggs Obituary (2025)

Dorothy Day Riggs "Dory," 49, died peacefully on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at Memorial Hospital in Yakima Washington, surrounded by family, after a brief illness. Dorothy was born on August 12, 1975, the 5th of 7 children born to father Richard E. Riggs and mother Waynette Riggs in Yakima, Washington, and was called "Dory" by friends and family. Dorothy attended Nob Hill Elementary School, Franklin Junior High School, and both Eisenhower and Stanton High Schools. While in high school Dorothy greatly enjoyed being active in the Skills Center radio station, where she hosted her own student radio program. Dorothy earned her AA Degree from Yakima Valley Community College, where she majored in General Education and had a special appreciation for all Environmental Science courses she took. Although homebound for much of her adult life, Dorothy was the favorite aunt of her many nieces and nephews for whom she cared greatly. Dorothy always lent a listening ear to all her many visitors. She loved Japanese anime and was able to attend local Japanese Anime conventions dressed as her favorite characters. And Dorothy was most proud of having provided a home to countless stray cats and cats from animal shelters over the years. Preceded in death by her beloved father Richard Riggs, Dory is survived by her mother Waynette Riggs, 6 siblings, and many nieces, nephews, and great-nephews. Memorials preferred to the Yakima Humane Society with whom Dorothy had collaborated in recent years. Brookside Funeral Home & Crematory are caring for the family.
