Evelyn Lynn Martin Obituary (2023)

Evelyn Lynn Martin, 84, of Yakima, WA passed away peacefully on August 22, 2023, surrounded by family. She held on until all her boys were by her side. Evelyn was born on October 11,1938 on the family farm to Jess and Hannah John near Wapato, WA. After Evelyn graduated from Wapato High School in 1956, she went to work for Lou Johnsons clothing store in Yakima, all the while earning a business certificate from Yakima Valley College. Later, she worked for a time at Singers. In 1956, Evelyn met Claude "Ray" Martin in Wapato one weekend while driving with a friend. After marrying in 1958, they went on to have three sons, Gary, Bruce, and Kevin. She wasn't the kind of mom that said "I love you" or gave hugs of affection often, but they held a special place in her heart, and they knew she loved them by her actions. While raising her family, Evelyn worked as a bookkeeper for the family business, Martin's Cleaning Service. She had a passion for square dancing, crocheting, and sewing. She created Christmas stockings by needlepoint for all her loved ones. Her greatest love and most treasured joy were watching her grandkids and great grandkids participate in sports and events. She made every game and event she could to cheer them on with a smile from ear to ear. She loved watching and was so proud of all of them. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents Jess and Hannah John, an infant brother Eugene, sisters, Barbara Chamberlain, Betty Blackby, and Florence Graham. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Ray Martin, sisters, Barbara Shaver and Jessie Graham, sons, Gary, Bruce, and Kevin, daughters-in-law, Anita and Lisa. Seven grandkids and eleven great grandkids, including two sets of twins, along with numerous nieces and nephews. For those wishing to pay their respects or send flowers, please send them to Brookside Funeral Home. The viewing will be from 3:00pm-7:00pm on Monday August 28th at Brookside. A graveside service will be held at West Hills Memorial Park on Tuesday, August 29th at 11:00am with a celebration of life to follow at the Chalet Village clubhouse, 215 N. 56th Avenue, Yakima, WA.
