KATHERINE (KOPP) MARSHALL
Katherine (Kopp) Marshall passed away peacefully on May 9th, 2015 at the Lola Kay Adult Family Home. She was born on February 3rd or 7th, 1917; never quite sure of her actual birthdate, so always enjoyed celebrating the full week. She was the youngest daughter of eight children born to Wendelin & Margaretha (Kuss) Kopp (German-Russian immigrants) and raised on the family farm south of Raleigh, North Dakota. She moved to Yakima to be near her eldest sister in 1943 when their mother passed away. Katherine married Merle Marshall in 1957, sharing 41 years together in Yakima before Merle passed away in 1999.
Katherine worked at St. Elizabeth Hospital for 30 years, beginning in 1943, retiring in 1973.
Her home and yard reflected her love of growing things with many houseplants filling her kitchen/sun room. Her yard was full of colorful blooms and she received Yakima City's Yard-of-the-Month Award in July of 2003 at the age of 86. She always had a garden and everyone loved her special pickled beets.
Katherine came from a large family and was blessed with many nieces and nephews. She always looked forward to the many cards she received from them. She was also Godmother to many. At family reunions in Bismarck, North Dakota she loved to tell stories of her growing up years on the farm with her 7 sisters and brothers. She looked forward to visiting with everyone as they also looked forward to her visits.
Katherine was a member of St. Paul's Cathedral Church. She loved going to church and attending the senior lunches with friends. She loved playing pinochle, being a regular player at the Harmon Senior Center for many years. Merle & Katherine square danced for many years in their early days, with Katherine sewing their matching shirts and dresses. She enjoyed the monthly dinners with Merle's W7AQ Amateur Radio Club and became an active member of the Terrace Heights Grange.
The family wants to thank the caregivers who took care of her. They truly cared for her as if one of their own family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and all 7 of her siblings: Rose Hartman, Mike Kopp, Amelia Schreiner, Anton Kopp, Neifa Koch, Edmund Kopp and Joachim Kopp.
She is survived by her remaining in-law, Frances (Joachim) Kopp (who still lives on the Raleigh, ND family farm), her local nieces and families: Connie (Larry) Hauver, Pam (Marvin) Bright, Cheri (Scott) Ruby and the many many nieces/nephews scattered throughout the States, with a good number of them still in North Dakota.
VIEWING will be held at Brookside Funeral Home & Crematory in Moxee on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 from 10:00am to 4:00pm. ROSARY to follow at St. Paul's Chapel, 15 S. 12th Ave. at 5:30pm. MASS of the CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be held Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at St Paul's Cathedral at 10:00am. BURIAL will follow at Calvary Cemetery. A fellowship LUNCHEON will follow at Terrace Heights Grange, 3701 W. Birchfield Rd., Yakima.
