Leslie James Lucas Obituary (2024)

Leslie James Lucas, of Yakima, Washington, passed away on December 3, 2024, at the age of 67. Known to his family and friends as "Les," he was born in Toppenish, Washington, on August 23, 1957, to Robert and Madonna Lucas. He was the third of six children. After spending part of his youth in the beach communities of Southern California, Les and his family eventually settled in Hesperia, California. Les was an accomplished football player in high school, kicking off a lifelong love of the sport. Following high school, he proudly served in the United States Army. Upon returning from service, he began a lifelong career as a cement mason, a trade that runs in the family. His cement projects took him all over Southern California, often working on large commercial projects. In 1979, Les married his first wife, Mary Anne, and embraced her daughter Sarah as his own. Together, they had two more daughters, Rachel and Jessica. In the late 1990s, Les moved to the Yakima area, where he later married his second wife, Roberta. Les was a big presence. From the long hair he wore into the 1990s, to his booming laugh and bright smile, he was hard to miss in a crowd. A true extrovert, Les was passionate about many things, especially his family, music, reading (particularly the works of Tolkien), gardening, and his beloved dogs. Music was a constant in his home, and Saturday mornings were rarely quiet. He cared deeply for the state of the world and had a strong compassion for those less fortunate. Les was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Robert, and his grandson, Kai. He is survived by his siblings, Rosili (Peter), Gary (Mary), Ted (Pam), and Barbara (Harold), his daughters, Sarah, Rachel, and Jessica (Joey), his grandchildren, Mac, Malorie, Luke, and Ashton, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew him. A Celebration of Life will be held on June 7, 2025, at 1:00pm, at Brookside Funeral Home (500 W. Prospect Place, Moxee, WA).
