Ellensburg, Washington
While surrounded by family, Margaret Katherine Foote (Hoffman) passed away on May 5th due to complications from diabetes. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii on January 10th, 1948, Margaret was the eldest child of Eileen and Harold (Dutch) Hoffman, who preceded her in death. A child of a traveling family, she had the opportunity to live in many exotic places, (Guam, Turkey, etc.) before her parents settled in Ellensburg. This experience allowed her to develop a compassionate and worldly lens through which she saw the world. Margaret graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1966, and continued a life-long friendship with her favorite teacher, Marion Klobuocher.
After graduating from EHS, Margaret moved to Seattle and married Richard Foote and gave birth to her son, Ben, before divorcing in 1972. Margaret then moved to Bellingham, WA where she and her sister Patti both received their LPN degrees from Bellingham Vocational Technical College in 1976. In 1977 Margaret and her son moved to Norfolk, VA where she worked in the ICU at DePaul Hospital. Margaret gave up nursing when she felt that the medical community did not allow people to die with dignity. She began working at Virginia National Bank (VNB) as a data processor and then continued to work in main frame system programming for the banking industry. It was during this time that she raised her son, cultivated her gardens, built a strong and loving community of wonderful friends, and shared her family and home with her dog Duke. Margaret moved to Glen Ellen, VA in 1990 and retired in 2010.
Margaret was a long-time member of the Edgar Cayce's Association of Research and Enlightenment (ARE), and spent many years learning about his teachings and holistic health. Margaret loved to read and surrounded herself with a large book collection that covered many genres. She was also a life-time student and extensively studied the spiritual teachings of all religions which led her to have a strong belief in Life after Death.
Margaret loved to garden and watch birds, she had a very productive vegetable garden and a beautiful yard filled with flowers, fruit and nut trees and numerous bird feeders. Due to health issues, Margaret moved back to Ellensburg in Nov. 2014 to be near family. She last resided at Meadows Place Assisted Living Facility. The family would like to thank Margaret's many friends who called, wrote and sent flowers as she ended her journey in this life. We also offer gratitude to the staff and fellow residents at Meadows Lane, where she received excellent care, and enjoyed many kind and supportive interactions. A special thanks to Eugenia Weissenfels for her caring assistance and Dr. Bob Hansen for his compassionate care.
She is survived by her son Ben Foote (Amy Hansen) of Norfolk, VA, her daughter, Louise Chandler of Heron, MT. Her sisters Patti Canterberry (Roger), Jody McClure (Robert) of Ellensburg, WA and Dotty Barr (Brad) of Maple Valley, WA , her brothers Joe Hoffman (Gretchen) of Ellensburg and Charlie Shannon (Sam) of Cannonsberg PA. She is also survived by nieces Sarah Canterberry(Gage), their children Opal & Lupine, Maureen Canterberry all of Portland, OR and Lauren Barr, Renton, WA. Nephews Roger Canterberry, Hartley Brown, David Hoffman (Jenny) of Ellensburg, WA, Robert McClure (Michael), San Diego, CA, Mark Zehnder, Bellingham, WA and his children Melissa and Marcus, Heather Sizemore(Jessie)their children, Sarah, Asher, Gabe, Jamie(Jason)Zeller their children, Abby, Garrett.
A small family service is planned on May 30th where Margaret's ashes will be scattered. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you perform an act of kindness, plant something in your yard to draw butterflies and bees, or fill a birdfeeder.
