Marie Kathryn Hurst Obituary (2023)

Marie Kathryn (Swope) Hurst passed away on Monday, October 23, 2023, in Yakima, Washington, at Terraces at Summitview Nursing Home. Marie left this world with the love and prayers of her entire family. Marie was born in Hattieville, Arkansas, at her family home (near Morrilton). Marie grew up in Arkansas and Oklahoma. In 1948, Marie moved to Yakima to live with her uncle and aunt, Sidney and Ella Rice, with her parents and siblings joining shortly after. On May 7, 1949, Marie married Walter Ervin Hurst, from Yakima, in Coeur dAlene, Idaho. Walter and Marie, with their children, Cheri Lynn and Sandra Gale, lived in Yakima, Washington, and later moved to Selah in 1965, living on a small farm for 13 years. Marie moved back to Yakima in 1978, following their divorce. Marie worked at the phone company, before becoming a housewife and stay-at-home mother, later returning to school late in life at Yakima Valley Community College and Central Washington University, to obtain her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education in 1972. Following graduation, she worked at the Toppenish School District, until her retirement in 1989. Marie extremely enjoyed her time working at Buena Elementary School, as a remedial reading teacher, where she developed close bonds with her students, parents, and teachers at the rural school. In retirement, Marie was heavily involved in the activities at the Union Gap Senior Center and volunteered at Memorial Hospital. Survivors include her children, Cheri (Mike) Berryessa, Selah, WA, Sandy (Dennis) Meyers, Longview, WA; grandchildren, Mike (Janet) Thomas, Selah, WA, Kindra (Scott) Mitchell, Gig Harbor, WA, Mackinsey and Allyson Meyers, Vancouver, WA, Tim (Roxanne) Meyers, Wenatchee, WA, Kim (Wayne) Jones and family, Moxee, WA, Andrew (Suzanne) Berryessa and family, Medford, OR; greatgrandchildren, Zack (Avery) Thomas, Selah, WA, Jessi (anc James Schut) Thomas, Selah, WA, Lucas, Peter and Isaac Mitchell, Gig Harbor, WA; sister-in-law, Barbara Swope, Yakima, WA, brother-in-law, Paul Burlingame, Yakima, WA, and former son-in-law, Jim (Lora) Thomas, Selah, WA, and numerous nephews and nieces. Marie is preceded in death by her parents, William "Bill" and Annie Swope; infant son, Terry Wayne Hurst; sisters, Iva Hollingsworth, Louise McGee, Shirley Burlingame; brothers, James "Jay" Swope and Bob Swope, and former husband, Walter Hurst. The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the sta at Terraces of Summitview for the love and care they provided to Marie. A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 9:00am, at Terrace Heights Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to the charity of choice.
